The Technics 1200 / 1210 (MKII) turntables are considered the ultimate in disco turntables.

They quickly established themselves as the machines of the night.

Never before had it been possible to manipulate speeds and directions so freely.
To this day, they remain the gold standard of reliability for vinyl artists worldwide.

Technics, the renowned hi-fi manufacturer owned by technology giant Panasonic Corporation, was surprised by the enormous success and continued to build its “twelve-tens” in virtually unchanged form from 1972 onwards.

It was only the digital use of DJ control devices that slowed down production. But Technics made sure to continue to build on quality and even improve it.

In the early 1990s, they released the legendary SL1200 Limited Edition.

Production was strictly limited to 5,000 units. Technics presented its flagship model in black piano lacquer with 24-carat gold-plated fittings, tone arm, and turntable.

The luxury players were hand-picked and distributed across the globe, each bearing a clearly visible extra plaque with a serial production number.

One pair quickly found its way to Berlin. For E-Werk manager Hilke Saul, it was love at first sight.

She bought the two turntables we are writing about here

for her new club: the E-Werk!

The E-Werk was the best place for it. Hardly any other club caused as much of a stir as this new techno temple in Berlin-Mitte.

And so it didn't take long for the E-Werk to be voted the best club in the world in 1996 and even make it onto the front page of the New York Times. In a sense, it was a tribute to Studio 54, only in the new music metropolis.

Between 1994 and 1997, there was no renowned DJ in the world who hadn't played there. The list of names is a who's who of electronic dance music: Carl Cox, Westbam, Sven Väth, Ritchie Hawtin, Laurent Garnier, Dr. Motte, Takkyu Ishino, Paul van Dyk, to name but a few. These MK IIs were rather rare in the club scene, which is why DJs loved to play them until the early hours of the morning.

Details / Modification

Since E-Werk was very active and often played at dances in other halls, specially designed professional flight cases were built to protect the valuable players. They were designed in a rock ‘n’ roll style, but made of clear Plexiglas and decorated with specially produced E-Werk (Twirl) stickers. Glamour for the glamour crew!

This protective construction ensured that the turntables were safe even on the wildest nights and could be transported securely; both MK IIs survived it all!

If you take a closer look at the two SL 1200 LTDs today, you can see some surface defects on the front right part of the body. However, these were not caused by improper handling.

The sweat of countless DJ legends, who had to place their hands right there to adjust the tone arm to the desired position, has left its mark.

Wear and tear can also be seen in the area of the speed fader. No wonder, because this sliding lever is the most frequently used tool on every disco turntable. It was used to push the sound of the tracks and the ecstasy of the ravers.

Technically, both devices were completely overhauled and cleaned in June 2025. Sliding contacts and potentiometers were replaced, and the synchronization and speed functions were precisely readjusted.

No, these are not just two exclusive Technics turntables. They embody the spirit of the legendary Berlin techno nights of the 90s. And even if many of the protagonists can no longer remember everything exactly, these two MK IIs have not forgotten a single tune!
